Tips on Building a Wooden Stage Platform

Building a wooden platform begins with knowing the actual dimension you plan to create for your platform. The structure design itself relates to any size you build so no need to change that. Knowing this first allows you to count the materials needed specifically. For example how many 4×4 you will need for the legs versus how many 2×4 for the stability structure and also how many 1×6 panels for the flooring.

It’s recommended to use 1×6 wood that are pressure treated if is an outside project for the flooring. Then purchase up to 12 foot and cut to size depending on the size you are building. I also recommend to give the wood panels a small gap to allow flow of water from outside rain. If yo uare building this for the inside, then there is no need to give the floor a space and so going side by side does it.

The general design is to first begin by building your square around the size of your stage. Then you want to add 2×4 across as shown on my video for center stability when stepping on it. With this method there are special brackets you can use to help give it an extra security rather than just relying on the screws holding the wood.

Once you have created your square for the wooden stage platform at the dimension you want. As well as you have added all your stability wood for the center portion. You now can begin to determine how high you wish the platform to be from the ground.

Building the legs to hold your wooden stage platform of the ground is best using 4×4 wood which are pressure treated regardless if is outside or inside as those are designed to be stronger. If your dimension stays within let say less than 8 feet by 6 feet, you may get away with simply adding 4 legs around. One 4×4 per corner should be enough to hold the wooden platform stable.

If you are planning though on building a platform over 10 feet by 20 feet let say as the one shown on the video for example, you will keep your structure for the overall design though; what changes now is the amount of added 4×4 for the legs as well as the added 2×4 for the center stability.

Lets wrap it up by saying that you mainly need 4 legs on a small wooden platform. if you go above 10 feet, you will need to now add 4 more legs to cross in between the center of the platform; this will help the middle section of the stage to have legs to sit on as well.
