When you decide is time to change your original grass, is important to first determine if is dead completely or should some water or lawn fertilizers be enough to help it come back to life.

When the original grass begins to die, it normally indicates lack of maintenance; which relates to not enough water or not enough treatment.

Sod installation on your lawn is pretty simple. The challenging step is removing the existing dead grass. Besides the removal of the old grass, you will also need to prepare the original dirt as well; the key is to leave no debris nor roots.

You will first need to start by removing all the dead grass from the area you are working on as shown on my video for example. I like to use a shovel for cutting and moving the grass along with dirt to help everything come apart.

You may then want to rake the dirt completely to move around all dead grass and roots still remaining under the dirt. After you do this you will see all the debris come above ground where you can now easily rake it into a pile and then pick it up.

You want to leave the dirt clear of all grass and roots and simply just dirt. At this time you are then ready to mix some soil into the dirt then wet the area a bit before laying down the new sod grass.

The first time you have finished the installation, I recommend you to hose it down with water for at least 15 minutes; this will provide a bonding of water between the soil and the grass from the start.
